‘Memorescapes’

Exhibition opening

With a start in visual arts (a whilst ago now) and a pseudo-professional past in freelance photography and illustration, I like to exhibit when I can, in between writing obsessions. In January 2006, I have a show in The Other Gallery at The Banff Centre, Canada, titled ‘Memorescapes’, in collaboration with Mark Axhorn.  

My work focuses on the interaction between a person and a place, and the role of memory in colouring your experience. Given the passage of time, perspective turns to meaning when memory takes over and your personal encounters, expectations and assessments have tempered your view. It’s essentially why people love to travel, to get that alchemy happening, broaden your understanding etcetera, etcetera.

There is a red circle/shape in each photo that is meant to symbolise the presence of an individual within the place. The locations shown in these photos are from Australia and Canada – two ends of the earth. There are also some ceramic masks that represent the earth, as in the place, wherever that may be, and the changes that a person undergoes through the art of travel.

Mark’s work is about: “False Memories of a Canadian Urban Rez”. Both of us are interested in the concept of memory and both are working on the theme with photography and ceramics.
